ABOUT THE AUTHOR
“Blood Witch” is a captivating 577-page dark fantasy novel independently published in 2020 and penned by Adega, the author of the evolution saga, delving into a world of magic, intrigue, and adventure targeting teens and adults.
The book is dedicated to family, friends, and those who wish to visit new worlds and personalities. Lives come and go, but within this work, the author hopes to immortalize those whom he has known and ideals that are eternal.
The story sets characters based on real people he knew over his long career as a doctor in dire situations to reveal to the world how real people would act in a fantasy setting. Darkness, Light, and Power unfold a person’s real hidden identity. Such are the characters in the Blood Witch Saga.
ABOUT THE BOOK
The book has a title page, acknowledge page, a dedication page, a 5-page table of contents, a 3-page prologue on the past of the first Blood Witch, the main story including illustrated maps of the world, a 6-page epilogue, and a 6-page pronunciation guide.
I got my softcover copy on Amazon a few years back. I was notified by the author that my version was from a defective batch with errors like no page numbers, font issues, and some spelling errors. The new edition has a different cover and is also available to purchase at Barnes and Noble.
The Blood Witch Saga will be told in 5 novels. All are separated by hundreds of years and separate stories. The first three talk about the origins of the curse and the world, the blood witch History. The last one will be an urban fantasy-like story in a kind of steampunk time. The second installment “Blood Witch History: Ulgonsah” is available to purchase at Barnes and Noble.
THE STORY
Magic always leaves a stain, a mark that can last for generations. Often the innocent or unsuspecting become blessed or victims of its powers. Veronica Trodour was born to a family that had been both cursed and profited by magic. Events unfold that reveal secrets, plots, and powers that surround the country and leaders of the kingdom of Ag which she was born to. For Veronica, she was trained to help and heal, not fight for survival.
Torren was born under the mage star in the same kingdom of Ag before Veronica and not in a family so well known for aiding and healing the unfortunate. He was born to a warrior father named Warren Cyng and a scholar mother named Bonny, trained to be a patriot and was given the very rare chance to be a mage. Only at the precise time every two hundred and three years can a mage be born. The problem was that most people feared mages and for good reasons.
While nations wage war and people die in the wake, sometimes the unbelievable truth of hidden powers and lost chances must be restored. The Blood Witch is not who she thinks she is and is without the emotional makeup to do what must be done. Find out if Ag and the Trodour family survive long enough to see victory.
THEMES
The themes in “Blood Witch” intertwine to create a rich tapestry of storytelling, captivating readers with its depth and complexity. Some of the prominent themes that caught my attention are:
DESTINY AND FATE
The novel explores the idea of predetermined paths and the struggle to fulfill one’s destiny, as Veronica and Torren confront their roles in the unfolding events of their world. Veronica comes from a strong lineage that has served the kingdom offering their medical services to the military. Since birth, Torren was destined to become a mage but the circumstances of their world prevented him from growing up learning about his gift.
MAGIC AND POWER
Central to the story is the theme of magic and its consequences, as characters grapple with the allure and dangers of wielding mystical abilities. As the war continues, nations want more power to gain more territory and the ones using powerful magic may be the last ones standing.
IDENTITY AND SELF-DISCOVERY
Veronica and Torren embark on journeys of self-discovery, confronting their true identities and grappling with the expectations placed upon them by society and their own families.
SACRIFICE AND REDEMPTION
The novel delves into the concept of sacrifice and redemption, as characters make difficult choices and face the consequences of their actions in their quest to protect their world. Reina is a great example. She gained power driven by hare and wanted to protect her reign but she had no experience. As Karma got to her tenfold, she also faced the results of her reign which impacted her greatly making her regret and repent for her actions.
MALE SEXUAL ABUSE
The “Blood Witch” delves into a typically overlooked aspect of society without resorting to graphic content: the sexual abuse of males. This narrative sheds light on the lack of understanding regarding male experiences and emotions in such situations. While it’s widely accepted for a female victim of abuse to reject her child, similar empathy is often not extended to male victims.
Given the medieval setting of the story, it’s plausible that the male victim would be compelled to marry their abuser or killed (having a small to no chance of society believing that a male could be a victim) which may justify the actions taken to prevent these scenarios from happening.
GOOD VERSUS EVIL
“Blood Witch” explores the age-old struggle between good and evil, as Veronica and Torren confront formidable foes and must navigate moral ambiguity in their fight against darkness. It explores the struggles Veronica goes through to not get corrupted into the dark side.
LEGACY AND HERITAGE
The story examines the impact of family history and legacy on individuals, as Veronica and Torren uncover secrets from their pasts that shape their present and future.
COURAGE AND RESILIENCE
Throughout the novel, characters demonstrate courage and resilience in the face of adversity, showing strength amid turmoil and uncertainty.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
“Blood Witch” offers readers a gripping journey into a realm with Kings and Queens, the High Guard, military, voles, witches, mages, spies, all-seeing crows, marriage of convenience, abortion, treaties, contracts agreements, and oats. I enjoyed reading the story with the set font size. It’s more comfortable and easy to read this way.
The story centers on Veronica, a powerful witch grappling with her destiny and the dark secrets of her past, alongside the newcomer mage, Torren. As they navigate a treacherous landscape filled with danger and deception, the duo must confront formidable foes and make decisions that will shape the fate of their world.
As I believe in karma, I was conflicted with what Veronica did to Princess Issah. While on one hand, Issah did something horrible, Veronica did something bad in retaliation. I’m conflicted in justifying the action depending on how far along Issah was and I’m also afraid for Veronica’s future when she faces the karma of this particular action she took during war times. The story covers many other topics such as dealing with grief, rediscovering love, finding courage, learning to become a leader, learning to trust the right people, and finding strength in family.
Adega penned a tale rich in character development, intricate plot twists, and immersive world-building, captivating readers with its fantasy, suspense, and mystery blend. The novel sets the stage for an epic series, with Adega planning a five-novel saga that explores the origins of curses and the world they inhabit.
FINAL THOUGHTS
“Blood Witch” offers readers a captivating journey into a world of magic, mystery, and intrigue. With its richly developed characters, intricate plot twists, and immersive world-building, the novel keeps readers enthralled from beginning to end.
In this first installment, through Veronica and Torren’s intertwining narratives, readers are drawn into a world where magic leaves a lasting mark, innocence is often tainted, and unexpected heroes must rise to confront the hidden powers shaping their destiny. As nations clash and secrets unravel, “Blood Witch” offers an unforgettable tale of courage, sacrifice, and the enduring struggle between light and darkness. The novel covers many interesting topics, leaving the reader deep in thought.
The themes of destiny, magic, identity, sacrifice, and courage resonate deeply, adding layers of depth to the narrative. Additionally, the author’s skillful storytelling brings the realm of Ag to life, making it feel both fantastical and eerily familiar. Overall, “Blood Witch” is a compelling read that will leave readers eagerly anticipating the next installment in the saga.
