Wulf and Batsy chronicles the adventures of a ferocious werewolf and his sexy female vampire companion, as they wander the earth in search of a quiet place to call home.

Unfortunately, all Wulf and Batsy seem to find are angry villagers out to destroy them, mad scientists out to exploit them, and creepy undead zombies begging them for help.

THE CREATIVE TEAM

Wulf and Basty series is written and illustrated by Bryan Baugh and was nominated as “Best Horror Comic Book of 2008” by the online Rondo Hatton Awards. Initially published by Viper Comics in 2008, the Wulf and Batsy series was republished by Alterna Comics in 2021 in stand-alone single-issue stories to break up the pace, in between the long, multi-issue story arcs. Alterna Comics was founded in 2006 by publisher Peter Simeti and has gone on to help produce over 100 titles since then.

Alterna has been home to a New York Times best-seller, FUBAR Empire of the Rising Dead (2012), and a film adaptation, The Chair (2017), and has gained attention for its modern newsprint initiative and affordable prices. Alterna Comics titles are distributed to readers and retailers worldwide from their online store. Alterna also has its YouTube channel like many other creators do.

ABOUT WULF AND BATSY

The first six issues of Wulf and Batsy contain stories that are split into 2 main story arcs: “We Have No Home”, and “Bizarre Experiments”. Each issue has approximately 32 pages printed in black and white on newspaper print paper. These horror adventure stories are targeted to mature audiences ages above the age of 17. Each issue has fake inventive ads related to the story.

Issues 1 and issue 2 cover the story arc titled “We Have No Home”.

Some nightmares are scarier from the monster’s point of view. Wulf and Batsy thought they had enough problems as a werewolf and vampire trying to keep a low profile in the human world. But now they’ve wandered into a small, rural town where every citizen seems to have a sharp eye for trouble, and an even sharper pitchfork. Check these videos titled “The Ferocious Friendship of WULF AND BATSY (issue #1 commentary by creator BRYAN BAUGH)” and BRYAN BAUGH talks about the BLOOD and GUTS of WULF AND BATSY issue #2 where the creator goes into detail about the first two issues.

Issues 3 through 6 covers the story arc titled “Bizarre Experiments”.

Wulf and Batsy investigate the hellish lair of the mad scientist, Professor Von Zag-Zog. Even our monster heroes will be horrified when they discover the true nature of Zag-Zog’s bizarre experiments.

THE CROWDFUNDING EXPERIENCE

Alterna Comics Fall 2022 pre-order crowdfunding campaign did not disappoint. Alterna is actively publishing comics and offers clients, through its crowdfunding campaigns, the opportunity to get new issues of comic books before they go public on their website.

The prices are very affordable for pre-orders and when it goes public the price remains almost the same. The interior pages of the book are made of newspaper material, very similar to readers’ digest just thinner, and with a more vulnerable cover.

In Addition to Wulf and Batsy series, I also got 2 available issues of Down Cast, the AlternaWeen collectors’ case with King Cryptid Prints from the campaign. The advantage of the campaign is that it offered a “create your bundle” option and it also offered additional products for free as stretch goals on the campaign which included:

  • Rare Alterna Foil LOG trading card
  • Alterna Series Trading Card #10 (Baron Rat)
  • Alterna Series Trading Card #11 (The Swan King)
  • King Crypted Sticker Set including a Prismatic sticker (trading card sized at 2.5×3.5 inches) and a 3″ circle sticker that is also available on the King Crypted #1-4 Campaign
  • Alterna Comics’ “Thank You” letter, which is much appreciated.

Alterna has good customer service. You can always be sure that you will get a response when you contact them. The tracking number was timely provided. They delivered everything in one package, which is what was expected and what I prefer. Receiving multiple packages can be costly for international backers who may use third-party packaging management services.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Wulf and Batsy stories are interesting to read. The art is quite distinctive with a particular cartoony style. You will find gore, partial nudity, and even some relationship challenges. It may sound strange, but the stories are fun to read. The way the stories are illustrated aligns with the tone of the stories.

The adventures of Wulf and Batsy will continue in future issues. The crowdfunding campaign is closed but the Physical and digital copies of the first six issues are available at the Alterna online store. Check them out!
